German Montes-Hernandez

German is leader of the Geochemistry team at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre (ISTerre). His current research interests include the development of experimental techniques to investigate the nucleation and growth of minerals and to characterize physicochemical reactions at the solid-fluid interfaces. German has been responsible for the design and installation of a unique time-resolved Raman spectrometer (785 nm) at ISTerre to follow precipitation reactions in-situ. In this experimental setup, the temperature (up to 300 °C), gas pressure (up to 300 bar), and agitation rate (up to 500 rpm) can be regulated independently, with the system being able to monitor chemical reactions occurring from 5 s (minimal time) to several days. This study was recently applied to investigate the nucleation and growth of particles and crystals from homogeneous and heterogeneous systems at different pressure−temperature conditions, including siderite, magnesite, and calcite and their precursors. GMH has authored 68 publications (h-index 26) on Earth and planetary sciences, Chemical Engineering, Material sciences, and 4 patents (as first inventor).
